Liverpool blast declared terror incident - police say passenger took explosive device into taxi

The motivation for the incident is "not clear" - but police believe they know the identity of the taxi's passenger and said four arrested men were thought to be "associates".

This occurred yesterday outside a women's hospital in Liverpool. It seems the cab driver copped on to what his passenger was up to and locked both of them inside the cab .. then the passenger exploded what seems to be an IED. Miraculously the cab drive got out with minor injuries and got discharged from hospital. The passenger is deceased.

The MET said just there they have an idea of who did it but unsure of motive. The remembrance day events were on close by, but that would be speculation at this moment

The initial reports said that the dead man asked the taxi driver to bring him to the Remembrance Sunday gathering, but that severe traffic jams blocked the way, and that then the decision was taken to go to the hospital---by whom and why, was not clear

I'm not sure how true this is, but it was the story reported in the British media just after the explosion.

That was pretty brave of the taxi driver.

(Apparently), when he realized what was happening, he got out of the taxi and locked all the doors.

Many would have just let the passenger get out of the taxi and enter the hospital, rather than risk provoking a bomber.

We cannot be sure that this is correct. The tabloid press love heroes and villains, and are very quick to take the "hero taxi driver" angle

The bomb may have gone off prematurely as the bomber was trying to exit the taxi, and the taxi driver may have just leaped from the taxi in time...or the passenger side may have taken the main force of the blast......or the driver might have been blown onto the street by the force of the blast...or he might have made a run for it when he saw the bomb....or he might have even been told by the suicide bomber to get out ....

The taxi driver will have to be interviewed to get the full story

@CarlDoyle @Gatsbygirl20 Most likely the cab had a complete bulkhead barrier between driver and passengers in the back for safety. This is common in the UK apparently due to violence toward cab drivers over the years.

Yes. The bomb probably malfunctioned somewhat and only had enough force to kill the passenger in the back of the taxi, without totally penetrating the barrier with the driver's seat

Rather than a "hero", the driver was probably just very lucky..

Well if that's the case it puts paid to my, very speculative, "theory".

I seem to remember that hospital bring used extensively by Irish patients, many with a fatal fetal abnormality diagnosis, prior to the 8th being repeal

Oh, I would rule nothing out....Who knows what his target was?

The fact that it happened just as the 11 am silence for Remembrance Sunday was starting, might give a clue.

But nothing is certain.

Seemingly the hospital was quite close to the route of the Parade. Could just be a local landmark to get out from. Homemade bombs tend to be unreliable, even when in the vicinity of their target (Shankill for instance).

The reports in the British press yesterday (probably pure speculation) was that he asked the taxi driver to take him to the Cathedral where there was a service of Remembrance about to start

But there were heavy traffic jams and the roads near the Cathedral had all been closed off because there was going to be a parade, etc.

Why he then decided to go to the hospital, or whose idea it was--the terrorist's or the driver's---we don't know

Al Swealmeen was a refugee from Syria who was befriended by Malcolm and Elizabeth Hitchcott, who knew him as Enzo, when he arrived in England.

What a git it looks as if he was - and some gratitude.

Further news about the bomber -

Mr Hitchcott said Al Swealmeen, who was an asylum seeker from the Middle East, formally converted from Islam at a ceremony in Liverpool's Anglican Cathedral. The cathedral, which was the scene of the city's main Remembrance Day service on Sunday, is a short distance from Liverpool Women's Hospital.
He said in the years before the attack Al Swealmeen had been sectioned under the Mental Health Act for about six months because of his behaviour with a knife.
